About Me

I am Vienna, and as expected, I am in my twenties. I am a teacher by profession but was already able to work in fields other than education. At age 20, I got my first real job as a payroll staff in a garment manufacturing company back in the Philippines. I worked there for three years and I was able to go from payroll staff, to secretary, to purchasing officer, and to export/import officer. It was fun working there. I’ve learned a lot because I was able to work in different departments. After those three long years, I quited and thought of going back to teaching but unfortunately Philippines doesn’t offer the highest salary to starting teacher so I landed an office job once again in a German owned electronic company in Manila. I worked there for seven months or so but decided to quit and try my luck abroad. After a few weeks, I was lucky enough to get a teaching job in China. I came here last November 2005 and for one year, I taught English to Chinese kids. After getting married to my Austrian boyfriend whom I met here, we decided that I stop teaching. Reason to that is another story and would be better discussed in another page.

Anyway, right now I still teach but not on a regular basis. Mostly, I stay home and be the spoiled housewife that I am. And since I have so much time, I nurture my recently gotten interest in cooking, writing, and web designing. It’s fun. It allows me to do something other than waiting for my husband’s return home from work.

Busy in Beijing

We just had our lunch—an easy to make pasta with sun dried tomatoes and pitted black olives. It’s almost 1:00 in the afternoon now and I am still feeling tired. I was sleeping the whole morning mind you but those long walks yesterday afternoon and the day before that seem to have sucked my week’s energy. So we are back here in Changchun since this morning from our exhausting two days and one night stay in Beijing. A few weeks ago, we applied for a visa at the Austrian Embassy and so when they called earlier this week to say that it is ready for pick up, we immediately decided to take the overnight train to Beijing on Thursday evening, rushed to our hostel on Friday morning, freshen up, took a taxi to the Starbucks which is right across the street from the Austrian Embassy, had a quick bite there and at 10:30, we were successfully able to get my passport. After that, we went directly to the Silk market which is just a few minutes walk from the Embassy. Spent a few hours there and spent a lot of RMBs. Hehe. Then we went to have our late lunch at the Sizzlers which is located in a Mall at Wang Fu Jing Dajie. Went back to our hostel, rested there a little bit then headed to the Acrobatics show. The day didn’t end there. After the acrobatics show, we took an hour walk from Wang Fu Jing Dajie to our hostel, passing by this Chinese Barbeque Street which has by far, unimaginable barbeques compared to Philippines’ Jurassic Park.

Though tired from the previous day’s jam-packed schedule, we still managed to get up at 8:00, prepared and packed our belongings for check out. At 9:00, we headed to the breakfast buffet and at 10:00, we left the hostel. Then we went walking… again, from our hostel to a park to the Tianmen Square and to a place where we can get a taxi—to my relief! We headed to the Silk Market to continue the unfinished shopping spree (hehe) then to Sizzlers to have that super-delicious late lunch once again. Before we went to pick our luggage at the hostel, we hopped by the bookstore to buy some books—I got “The Diary of Anne Frank”. We arrived at the train station quite early so we stayed in the first class waiting lounge for an hour and a half . I was able to read my new book right away. At 10:00pm, we are in our overnight train to Changchun.

It is now the morning after our short trip to Beijing. I do still feel tired but with all the shopping, I bet you would understand if I say I am super tired but I am not complaining.

Tomorrow's Plan

I will be meeting my students tomorrow. Ha Ra and In Ok. Both are the same age as I or maybe a few years younger. This is supposed to be our fourth meeting and we will meet in their student’s flat.

I teach them English or I guess it is more correct to say that I help them to improve their English skills. We meet every Monday and Wednesday and we don’t normally talk about grammar or other technicalities of English. We talk about anything that interests us and every now and then, if they commit a mistake in their grammar, I correct them. Plain and easy. Do I get money from it? Yes, it is not much but it is ok. The main reason why I am doing this is not because of the money anyway but because I wanted to do something worthwhile, something to keep me busy, to keep me out of the house, and to be in the company of other people. A little bit socializing so to speak.

I meet In Ok first at McDonalds Tong Zhie Jie. She was with her guy friends that time. I was alone enjoying my mcfries while flipping the pages of my Reader’s digest magazine. They were sitting close to where I was and I caught them staring at me a few times. They were probably wondering why a “Chinese person” is reading an English magazine. At some point I smiled at them and then they started talking to me. Asked me where I am from etc etc. Towards the end of the conversation, In Ok asked me if I would like to tutor them and that was the start. I gave her my number. In Ok introduced me to Ha Ra on our first tutoring session. They are best of friends. Both are Koreans studying Chinese Language in Jilin University. They invited me for lunch tomorrow in their flat. They will cook! I wonder if I could eat it because I know for a fact that Korean food is super hot and hot is not really in my favorite list. Anyhow, whether or not I will enjoy the food I will still, for sure, enjoy their company.
