Just Another Thought On This Intercultural Marriage Thing

Maria and the von Trapp Family and Princess Sissi were two separate cartoon programs shown in the Philippines. The stories of these programs were based on the lives of real persons, Maria von Trapp and Princess Elizabeth of Bavaria. I have closely watched these programs and enjoyed it as a kid. I remember very vividly how I rush home straight after school to watch what happens next on Maria’s delightful life with the von Trapp family. I and my cousins would toss our slippers and race to the place closest to the TV before 4:30. Day after day, we would sit there for 30 minutes just to have another dose of Maria. I also remember being able to memorize and sing some songs from this cartoon. Funny. This is how I got my very first knowledge of Austria.

Princess Sissi came in later. I guess I was already in my teens but still young enough to be addicted to animes and cartoons. Princess Sissi’s graphics was already way better than that of Maria and the von Trapp Family but somehow Princess Sissi, though based on a true story, seems to be a bit farther from reality. Nonetheless, I enjoyed watching it as well.

I grew up, went further with my studies, learned a lot while being in the university but still learned too little about Austria. Some things about Hitler, two world wars and Mozart are among these few things. I didn’t give these things much thought then. I thought I could go on with my life without knowing further about this little European country. I was pretty much contented with what I know until a few more years later.

I met R.

And suddenly I felt that, no matter how deeply I scanned my stock knowledge, what I know of Austria is so insufficient. Of course it is okay now considering that Rene’s knowledge of Philippines is way less than what I know of Austria (hehe) but someday we will live there and I will be the one to adjust. I am the one who should be able to integrate. I have to learn how to get by, to learn how to speak their language, etc. Really, this intercultural marriage thing needs an incredible amount of effort from me.

Food Food Food!

I have been in China for about 15 months so you can imagine the intensity of my cravings for Philippine food. How can I not miss those fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood? And those that are seemingly not accepted by Renes sensitive stomach like balot, TJ hotdogs, tinapa, chicharon, tuyo, tapa, daing, tocino, bagoong, alamang, canton, halo halo, and a lot more. Sigh!. Why cant I find these here in China, a place where there is a huge range of weird and strongly stinking cuisine that will put our famous bagoong to shame? Believe it or not but bagoong will smell like Chanel No. 5 when compared to some food here.

So before we went to Malaysia I expected to find similar food there since Philippines and Malaysia are more alike than Philippines and China and I wasn’t disappointed. Well,I didnt find most of the true blue Pinoy food (or the weird ones) but I was really glad to find tropical food that I and Rene can agree on and indulge in.

This Is The Day

The Day Before

Tomorrow will be the big day. We would have been all so relaxed and prepared by now if we have not met the two ladies at the Traisen Park earlier today. We went out shopping for small stuffs with R´s parents awhile ago and while we were in one of the stores, I heard somebody says “Ito, bayaran mo na rin.” I immediately felt thrilled by the idea that there are Filipinos, other than me, in that store (or in the whole of the city) so I went closer to them and greeted them. They are two middle aged women, shopping and casually talking in Filipino. I started a small conversation with them and eventually mentioned that I will be getting married tomorrow. After both of them said their congratulations, one lady, whom I will call Mrs. K from here on, asked me if I have all the needed documents already so I said yes because as far as we are concerned, we do have all the necessary documents already. Mrs. K asked me if I have the Legal Capacity to Contract Marriage—a document issued by the Philippine Embassy in Vienna and that was when I went white. I was like “what the hell is that?” So I asked her politely about it. Mrs. K said that she is working in the Philippine Embassy in Vienna so she knows that I need this document—it is supposed to be the document which allows me to get married. I said that I have my Certificate of Singleness which is duly authenticated by Philippines´ DFA and verified by the Austrian Embassy in Manila. I also told her again that the wedding is tomorrow and so far, we didn’t have any problem with the Austrian authority. They accepted my Certificate of Singleness as a proof that I am legally capable to contract marriage. At this point I guess she got confused as well. She cannot understand why the Austrian Authority accepted my Certificate of Singleness as a proof that I am legally capable to get married. She said, as far as Philippine Law goes, this document should be acquired before the marriage and since I am getting married tomorrow it was already too late to obtain this document and she mentioned that I will probably have problems with future documentations because of this.

So what now? It was one hell of a pooper. I started to feel disappointed. I thought that everything is done and prepared already, that there will be no hassles from here on. We have encountered a lot of problems with Philippine offices while we were acquiring documents for our wedding. When finally we got it all settled (or we think we got) after months of processing these documents, I thought that should be it. It should be then smooth. But right now, after talking to Mrs. K, it does not seem to be so.

Looks like we will still be able to get married tomorrow however, we should expect some problems afterwards. Like when I will apply for a new passport with my new name.

Anyhow, the women were gone before I can ask another question. R´s father immediately phone the person he knows in the nearest Philippine Consulate to ask about this and this person promised that she will talk to the Philippine Embassy people in Vienna about what to do with our case and she will inform us then once she have an answer. Later in the afternoon, we saw the two women again. I went to them and asked further about this. Mrs. K said that it is definitely too late to obtain a Legal Capacity to Contract Marriage now however she advised me to present myself in the Philippine Embassy in Vienna ASAP. She also advised me to bring some documents. She said, she is not sure but I will probably need to sign some kind affidavit or something.

Sigh. R said, when all is settled, we will probably write a book about this.

Holiday in Malaysia

Unfortunately, our blogsite : www.livejournal.com has been blocked here in China so since we got back from Malaysia, I didn’t have the chance to update it. It’s been months now and there’s no exact date when it will be unblock by the Chinese government. Hmmm… China, China, China –how strange your way is!

engaged.jpgAnyway, I can’t wait any longer. It’s too bad because there were a lot of things about Malaysia which I wanted to write about. Now, because of the long delay… I have forgotten most of them. Let’s start with what I remember… Until now I still find myself dreaming that we were still sitting on some beach in Langkawi while watching the sun go down. Langkawi served to be a great place for us so we are really glad that we decided to go there. And…this place will be specially memorable for us because we got engaged there.

Day 3 in the Land of Sissi

I am well-rested today compared to the previous mornings. I slept at 10pm and woke up at 6am. Sweet. After a tiring hike yesterday, a long good rest is inevitable. Thanks heavens!

I cannot, no matter how I try to, explain the beauty of the places I am seeing here each day maybe because these are not usual for me. I have been to other countries in Asia but they are nothing like the places I see here in Austria. Of course each country I have been in Asia have their own beauty to speak of (especially Philippines) but I don´t know… Countries in Asia give me the feeling that I have not really left home or that I am still somewhere near home. The places and people I see there are very similar to what I see everyday back home. But here, I just know that I am in another place. Not necessarily a better place but just a very different one.

Asia has fine world class beaches, mega cities, superb cuisine, unique culture, and a whole lot more which we, Asians can be proud of. And some few things which Europe can boast about are its historic cities, classic architecture, endless meadows, and high quality of living. Two different worlds in my point of view and I am lucky that I have the chance to see both.

Day 2 in the Land of Sissi

I woke up at 5:00am again today. Urg! R said it would get better in a few days. I hope that it gets better soon or at least before Saturday because for sure, I wouldn’t like to look like how I am looking now on what is supposed to be the most important day of my life.

Yesterday was nice. R, H, T and I had a little walk around the city while waiting for E to have her hair done. We went to this tiny park where the autumn coloured trees are and I´ll tell ya, ´tis extremely pleasant there. Sure, there´s autumn in China but you have to go far uphill to really have a feeling of this season. Here in Austria, there´s a fair number of trees all over the place making the striking colours available everywhere.

We had a nice KEBAB for lunch after the walk. Finally, after craving for months, I was able to have that tasty Kebab with special rice and yogurt once again.

Back in the Land of Sissi

We just got here yesterday at about 8:30pm. The plane landed in Vienna at around 6:00pm and because of the heavy rain that greeted us, we needed more time than usual to drive home. We got a really nice welcome from R´s family when they picked us up at the airport plus we got a nice woof and meow of welcome from Jimmy and Connie when we got home. We didn’t sleep directly though the Jetlag was dragging us to bed. We stayed up a little bit to eat some pizza, drink some wine, and to talk with R´s family. We went to our room at about midnight and we started to unpack however, we were not able to finish it so I continued it this morning.

My jetlag is really bad this time. I am fully awake at 5:00am after an extremely short 4-hour sleep. I still feel unbelievably tired but staying asleep is impossible. It wasn’t bad when we went here last summer in fact, I didn’t feel that jetlag have struck me back then but now, Oh poor me, I feel that it is making up for whatever it failed to do the first time.

Today we plan to go to downtown and have breakfast there and maybe lunch too. I have noticed from looking out of the window that the trees changed their colours already and they are beautiful. I am sure that we will have a lot of pictures when we get back.
