I am a little bit frustrated. Reason to this is that my husband who is such a computer geek, changed the OS of our home computer from Windows to Linux. I think Linux is a very cool operating system but I do not like it because it is too different from Windows which I am so used to using. It frustrates so much because I feel like I am starting to learn how to use computer again. It’s so different! It slows me down. I always have to do something extra when I want to install something. It’s not like Windows that I can just download and install. Plus, there are a lot of soft wares I need which are still not available for Linux OS. It sucks!
Linux is a very impressive software but I think it would not be user friendly to those who’s mind are used to Windows like me. I hope I can convince him to change it back to Windows.
Linux is better, both technically, and for users. By learning it, you’ll learn a lot more about computers, you’ll be a lot safer online, and you’ll vastly expand your potential. Be brave, and step into a new world.
p.s.: there really isn’t any piece of software that’s not available for Linux. If you’re not using debian/ubuntu though, you’ll need to go look for it. Debian comes with something like 18000 programs. Compare THAT to windows.
p.p.s: Windows is made by microsoft, which is a criminally convicted organisation, known to bribe governments and educational bodies, extort poor people, monopolise markets, etc. Being different from THAT is good.
No !! With Linux (or better: GNU/Linux) you can do almost everything. You just have to learn how.
Almost every Windows software has a counterpart in Linux.
There is still a lot of work to do to make Linux completely user-friendly… but remember that Linux is FREE (like free speech) !
Would you change usability with freedom ? Sorry I wouldn’t.
Bye =)
I’m the computer maintainer in my family and I switched us over to Linux 2.5 years ago. Yes, there was much grumbling, but I was the one who had to fix the computer after someone else got it infected with a virus. I got tired of doing that. Then there was the mysterious entry in the win.init(?) file that had no name. The last straw was WGA. My wife never voiced any displeasure but I know it was a little difficult for her at first. Now she loves the stability of it and the knowledge that there is nothing her teenage son can do to wreck it. As a bonus she can lock him out if he doesn’t do his chores. That may sound cruel, but this is an important feature of family stability. If we could all have our own computers then I wouldn’t mind them using Microsoft’s products. Just don’t expect me to fix it when something goes wrong. And don’t mention any problems either. The maintainer has the last word on what goes on the computer.
like i said, i honestly think linux is a great OS and there a lot of cool things you can do with it. what i meant when i said it sucks is that i have to learn how to use it because for me it’s so different from windows which i am so used to using. i prefer to use windows not because i think linux is not good. it’s just that at this point, i really don’t feel like learning how to go around a new OS.
to dainaccio,
my husband told me the exact same thing!
but i will stick with windows not because i would trade freedom to usability but because i feel that i don’t have the time now to learn a new OS.
maybe some other time. =)
thanks for dropping by.
msmyla,
Thank you for your honesty. Your difficulties with Linux are same as about half the switching population. I just read a blog right before I came back here. The blogger was an artist and he had used both Apple’s OS X and Vista. His assessment was that while both OS X and Vista were pretty, Linux (in the form of Ubuntu) was beautiful and absolutely configurable. He could make his computer look like a Mac or Vista or XP or like no other desktop around. I don’t know if you’re an artist, I’m not, but I really enjoy fixing up my desktop just the way I like. Once and a while I do volunteer work at a non-profit. They use Windows XP unfortunately. I used XP for 2 years too, but I can’t stand to work on those machines. Only one desktop, not four! No control over mouse focus? Internet Exploder? I’M OUTTA HERE! I can’t wait to get back to my PCLinuxOS. I have to use it for about an hour before I calm down.
I just saw your “thanks for dropping by” since I had already typed this I don’t want it to go to waste, really. I think you’ll be using Linux some day, not because you have to but because you want to. That’s usually how it works.
