Sol Latino in Changchun

We went out for dinner last night and I believe that we’ve just been to the best restaurant in the city. Sol Latino is the name of the restaurant and it is new. It is a nice small Mexican restaurant and I would write about it more next time as we intend to go back there and perhaps, I can take a camera with me so I can take photos of the place.

Sol Latino will be the first on our list from now on. Steak king comes in second, the Thai Restaurant third, and the Shangrila fourth. It is not difficult to please me, I can go to any restaurant and eat there just as long as it’s clean but I have to say that a lot of westerners (including my husband and his friends) are very particular when it comes to dining out. The restaurant being clean is not enough, most westerners also insist that they get the value for their money. So if the steak is not rare enough or not cooked the way they like it, you can be sure that they will complain. I don’t think Asians complain just as much.

Anyway, I personally like Sol Latino and one of these days, I will go there alone for a coffee (since they serve a very good cappuccino). It is quiet there and they have a wireless internet there. (*wink) It’s perfect. I can spend the whole day there.

Hi, it was interesting that I ran into your blog. I was looking to see if they had mexican food in Changchun. I am a mexican american in Texas. Thru the net, I had previously met a lovely Pinay from Bangkok. I finally went to see her in Jan 2006. She was a very wonderful person but I felt nervous that she did not express herself much and would some times just clam up. This was unsettling. She insisted on wanting marriage but it was too soon after my divorce for me so I guess we have drifted apart.

Now I’m conversing with a Changchun native but I’m finding that she is also somewhat quiet and reserved about personal things. I’m not sure if I’m paranoid about whether these ladies just want to come to the US or if they’re looking for someone to settle down with since we’re all in our late 40s.

Any advice? Thanks, and I like your site, it is very interesting.

    Hello Danny,

I know of 2 mexican restaurants in Changchun. Sol Latino and Tabasco. If I am not mistaken Sol Latino is being owned and run by a mexican couple.

About your girl in Changchun… well, i honestly don’t know what to say. I was never in such situation but I”ll tell you my thoughts anyway.

If you are nervous that Asian women seem to not express themselves then they are more nervous that they are not taken seriously by Foreigners (western guys). I cant say for sure but maybe these Asian women who want marriage before anything else would like to make sure that they are not on the losing side. Do you know what I mean? Although Asian’s views on sex and marriage is getting more and more modern, it is still behind to that of the West. A decent Asian woman dont just have sex, she have to be in a relationship and it have to be a serious relationship. If an asian woman would give herself to somebody then in the end did not marry that person, she will feel used. She will lose her face.

On the other hand, maybe there are some who would do anything to go to your country.

    Shrug*

Thank you for your reply and views, I really appreciate your thoughts. I found that several Spanish teachers from central and south America frequent Sol Latino and speak highly of it. I saw in another posting of yours that you enjoy their enchiladas, one of my favorite plates, and what I had for dinner this evening, haha.

Thank you also for the pictures that you posted, it really arouses my curiosity and desire to visit there. However, it would definitely be in the summer as I am not used to that type of winters you have there.

Would you mind sharing with me what other plates you enjoy at Sol Latino?

    Pagtatampo and walang modo…..
I went to your Bizarre Marriage blog and identified so much with what you wrote. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get any of the links there to work so I’m back to Sol Latino writing about your revelations. It is really helpful to understand some of what happened but you’re absolutely right, once pagtatampo sets in, a herd of elephants could not get an angry Pinay to say anything. And I noticed that no matter what I said after that, it was taken in the wrong context, in fact, in the very worst light. As a typical male trying to solve the problem, I pushed for communication and angered her so much that I finally got a response. It was not a pleasant one. I saw my tiny, beautiful, sweet Pinay become possessed. She was harsh and rude and vicious and then hung up on me and was silent for days. Thank you for helping me understand that behavior that so puzzled me.

In my Mexican culture, we also look down on walang modo. In fact, a person can have little or no formal education, but if their social etiquette is poor, they are frowned upon. That seems to be changing now or maybe its changing with Mexican Americans who too often lack the manners which are part of our heritage. Anyway, thank you for these insights and please keep them coming.

All my Pinoy friends are gone, any chance you can get some advice on how to deal with pagtatampo?
