How’s Your Business Doing in this Downturn?

Obama has been inaugurated and many believe that he can turn the economy from its current situation. I, too, personally believe that Obama will do everything he can to stop the rapid decline of the economy and twist it to face better direction but he needs a lot of time to do this. I have read somewhere that we should be out of this downturn by the first half of 2009 and I want to believe that but experts in economics said that that is simply unrealistic. According to them, getting out of this recession could take years.

When it first came out, I didn’t give it a thought. The economic crisis in the US didn’t get my attention until recently. Now I am deeply concerned mainly because we ran a small business back home and as tiny a business as it is, it is affected by the crisis. My mom said that the business could still struggle a few more months then after that she might be forced to take some sort of a loan to continue it until the economy starts to pick up again.

A lot of people who run a business are now facing a dilemma. They have to choose between closing down and seeking some sort of financing. Those who have faith in the economy and their business take small business loans but even if such is very tempting at the moment, business owners should be very careful about where to get loans. They have to choose a loan that will help their business cope with the downturn and not push their business further to the ditch.

Smaller Laptop

thetwogeeks.JPGI got a new laptop.

My previous laptop is already small with its 12.4” size but my new laptop looks way smaller with its 10.2” size. It’s a good buy considering that its specifications are not bad at all. The brand might not be popular but I think it is very competitive with its 120 GB memory, 1GB RAM, Intel atom processor, built in web cam, wireless adapter, 3 USB slots, SD card slot, and a LAN Card. I think it’s enough for what i need it for plus it is super light–perfect for a girl!

I sold my old laptop to my sister. It’s also an Hassee and it has better specifications but I sold it to her because she’ll need a stronger computer than me.

Enduring the Financial Crisis

If you haven’t felt the effect of the financial crisis, you are quite lucky because I don’t know anyone who isn’t affected by it. My mom who runs a small shop that subcontracts jobs from big garment manufacturing companies noticed that job orders don’t come as often as they used to and her contractors are boldly begging for her to lower her quotations to the limits. In her despair to get some job contracts, she gives in to the demands of her contractors barely leaving her with profits. My mom’s business is too small compared to the company where my husband works but both felt the collapse of the economy.

My husband is in automotive industry so they are among the top businesses that are badly hit by the recession. He, as an employee, felt it too specially in the last two months. A designing project which normally needs 10 engineers to work on it is now forced on lesser number of engineers so that means my husbands and his colleagues will have to work more because their company cannot afford to hire additional staff.

Business owners this time are paddling so hard to fight the currents but what would work if your business is already way down the bend? Would a business loan help it cope with the slump? Maybe. But before you even consider getting a business loan, it is better to consider another source of funding and that is personal savings. If you have faith that your business can get back on track, why not use your own money. In this manner you won’t be worrying about interests and monthly payments. But if personal savings is not an option then get a loan but just be careful to choose the one that is for your business’ interests. Go for loans with lower interest rates and no closing cost or fees.

Got Enough Holidays

I am back and I have lots to tell.

For now, I can only give you the summary of what I’ve been up to the last couple of months because I don’t want to write a novel (hehe).

And so…I think I have mentioned that on the second week of December, I had my exam and I passed it. After that I took a break (from stress). I celebrated my 27th birthday then prepared for our Christmas Holiday in Austria. The holiday in Austria was great and that deserve a separate entry so I won’t elaborate now.

We flew back to Shanghai on the second week of January and stayed here a few days before we went for another holiday in the Philippines.

After two sweet weeks of tropical sunshine, we are again back in Shanghai and that means I should get back to work.

So here I am…blogging.
