A Thousand Splendid Suns

Like I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I really would like to go back to reading  books.  I think it’s about time I lessen the time I spend sitting in front of my computer. So yesterday after our dinner in a nearby German restaurant, we dropped by this small bookstore that sells foreign language books. I was so delighted when I saw Khaled Hosseini’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns” that I took it immediately to the cashier. I read Hosseini’s first novel, “the Kite Runner” and I remember crying buckets while reading it.

I still have some books waiting on the line to be read. I also have some German books I got from my husband. He bought these to encourage my interest in the German language. But the German books can wait. First I have to read “A Thousand Splendid Suns”.

My Lucky Day

After three long weeks of working, I hit the high today because I did not just succeed in setting my blogging community but I also receive the much needed books I ordered from Amazon weeks ago.

WordPress Theme Design and Drupal 6—I know they are totally different CMSs but I would like to experiment on both. I’ll start with the WP theme design because I am already familiar with WP. After that, I will start with Drupal and see how far I can go with these two CMSs.

Enjoying Knowledge

It’s been a month since I have started attending my German language course and I think that those four straight weeks of going to school for 5 hours each day has paid off. I can feel the huge development whenever I try to read texts in German and whenever I watch something in German. Now that my knowledge in the German language has surpassed that of a beginner’s, I think learning a foreign language is not so bad. I remember how negative I was towards learning German. I’ve always seen it as an obligation but now that I can speak and understand it, I am actually enjoying it. Of course the constraint of having to go to school every day still sucks and I don’t think that will change but I am really glad that I agreed to learn German and I am glad that I’ve got a husband who is very supportive and who does not lose his patience even during the time when I was so uncooperative.

Tomorrow, we’ll have our midterm exams and I don’t have huge worries about it. I am confident that I can and I will do well on it so tonight, instead of going over my notes, I will blog and after that I will read a book—a romance novel written in German.

My Dream Hike

I have been running-jogging-walking for more than a couple of months now and so far my resistance improved dramatically. That is why, I enjoy hiking more than before. Now, I can dream bigger like… climb Kilimanjaro. Why, not? I have been dreaming to do that since I saw the picture of it in a travel magazine. Mt. Kilimanjaro is what Ernest Hemingway was describing when he wrote “as wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun.”

Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is now the hottest activity for 25,000 adventurers who set foot at Tanzania every year. Surely this will be a great challenge for any hikers and climbers alike. Though climbing Kilimanjaro may not need any technical skills or special equipment, the journey may not be that easy too, according to UltimateKilimanjaro.com. That is why they will help anyone who is interested to take that challenge from answering to finding answers to all your questions about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, to route selection to preparation and training, to exploring Tanzania and safaris. And with that assurance, anyone is ready to take the experience of a lifetime.

Cher: Catch Her in Las Vegas

cher.jpgOne thing that my mom and I share is our interest in Cher. I remember us dancing like crazy while singing “if I could turn back time…” My mom learned and started to love Cher in her early 20s and a few decades later, I followed. I admired Cher because other than being one of the best female artists of the century, her beauty doesn’t seem to fade! She still has the sparkle in her huge sexy eyes and she still got that smooth and flawless skin.

Maybe not a lot of us know but Cher is also an excellent actress. She actually won a Best Actress award for her role in the movie “Moonstruck”. Not a lot of singers who tried acting were able to accomplish that so kudos to Cher. Also, another interesting thing about Cher is that before having a career, she’d been with Warren Beaty and in the early 80s, she dated Tom Cruise! Ok, maybe that is not cool for most of you but for me it is because these two men are among the few whom I consider to be truly handsome.

Cher is living a full life and there is no sign that she is stopping soon. Right now, she’s going to do a series of shows in Las Vegas and for sure, the Cher Tickets at Caesars Palace will be selling like hot pancakes. She is replacing Celine Dion and her shows will start in the beginning of May 2008.

One Great Comedy Show

mwc.jpgI do like “Nip/Tuck” but sometimes I also need a break from its dramatic and derange plot so I put “Married with Children” in our DVD player every now and then.

I don’t remember watching a single episode of this comedy TV series in the Philippines and I don’t understand why. I mean how can some of the Philippine TV channels broadcast the reruns of “Beverly Hills 90210” over and over again and not air a single episode of “Married with Children”?

I think this show is great! I like “Friends” and “The Nanny” but the characters in these sitcoms doesn’t have the verbal jousts the characters “Married with Children” have. The lines are well written and the members of the cast are excellent too.
