What I Got for Christmas

Christmas is over but the whole house still has the mood of Christmas. We are still eating special food and drinking good wine. We are still being invited to dinners and we also have visiting relatives during the day. I guess it would be like this until the New Year. My in-laws are really warm hearted folks and I truly feel at home here with them.

Anyway, I got a lot of presents and I am really thankful to the people who gave me these. I got a pink Filofax organiser with a matching pink Parker pen from Marcus. He also gave me a Starbucks notebook and a voucher at Palmers (famous lingerie store). I got a Christmas décor from my brother-in-law along with cookie molds and a cookie cookbook. From my parents-in-law I got a book about Sissi, a book about Austria, shower set, a voucher at a mall and a ticket to a musical (Marcus got this one too). From Marcus’ grandmas I got cookies, chocolates, liquor, and Christmas cards with money.

And oh, I got a mini karaoke set from my in-laws. This is their late birthday present to me. Aren’t they thoughtful?

Christmas Jetlag

We got here in Austria last Friday and even if it’s already days since, my jetlag is still at its worst. I feel sleepy during the afternoon and I am awake at 3:00 am! My husband and I have been the party poopers in all the Christmas party we’ve been because we always feel sleepy and needed to excuse ourselves early. I love travelling but I am doomed when it comes to the effects of crossing time zones.

I really hope it will be better soon. I hate jetlag.

Our Last Minute Shopping

We went to the city last Saturday for our last minute Christmas shopping. Benjamin (my 13 year old brother-in-law) had to shop for some gifts to his parents and I had to buy my gift to Marcus. Since neither Benjamin nor I have a driving license yet, Marcus needed to drive us to the city. After dropping us to the pedestrian area, he went to a wine library and waited for us there.

Benjamin and I wandered around and I noticed that even though it was very cold and it’s just two days before Christmas, a lot of people were still out and doing their Christmas shopping. The stores were still busy with men and women handling over their credit cards to the cashier not minding if they have unsecured or secured loans. Anyway, it took me about10 minutes to find the perfect gift for Marcus but it took two hours or so for Benjamin to find the gifts for his parents.

This Christmas

This Christmas will be the first Christmas that Marcus and I will spend together and we are spending it as husband and wife. :-) I decided to buy my Christmas gift to him in Europe. Upon arrival there, I still have two days to get him a gift. I just have to connive with my in-laws to take me somewhere where I can buy something. I am looking forward to be in Austria again because this means a lot of good cakes, chocolates, cookies, bread and Schnitzel. Also, I will be able to see my in laws again…haha, you probably don’t believe it but they are super nice folks. Eventhough we can’t communicate to each other that well, they have their own way of making me feel like I am a part of their family.

As to my family back in the Philippines, this would be my third Christmas away from them. I know it seems cruel but I don’t feel that sad because I am sort of used to being away from them already and I am sure that the feeling is vice versa. Of course I do miss them but we talk so often on Skype and this makes me feel that even though we are not physically together we are still very close to each other.

In other news, Marcus “R” went to work this morning. Yesterday is supposed to be his last day at work before our trip to Austria. We were supposed to spend this day preparing everything but unluckily, he still have to work today leaving me to do the packing and everything. I hate it. This new project he is in now seems to be very demanding. He works from 7:30 am to 7:00pm and he have to cancel our trip to the Philippines this coming February because he have to work in this time. :( Now, I don’t know if it is the best decision to stay here in China for another six months.

Christmas Rush

I still have some shopping to do, some laundry to do, some ironing to do, some gifts to wrap, some posts to write and some CSI episodes to watch! I don’t know if I will be able to squeeze all these in that short time! We are leaving for our Christmas Holidays soon and I still have a lot of things to do.

Plus, I still don’t know what gift I should give to my hubby. I find really difficult to decide on what gift to give him. Sucks!

In other news, Daniel and Anne were here yesterday and the day before that and it is official—they are a couple now. :)

Christmas “Padala”

It’s almost Christmas and for Filipino peeps like us who are working and living abroad; this could mean hefty Christmas remittances for our dear families back home. But are you experiencing the difficulty of pulling those remaining dollars from your wallet to handling it over to the Western Union Cashier? I do! Why? Because the amount of dollars I am sending now have lesser value compared to its value last Christmas. When Philippine peso was starting to get stronger against US dollar, a lot of people say it not because Philippine Peso is actually getting stronger but because the dollar is getting weak but over time, Peso proved itself by performing well. Peso has gotten stronger against all other currencies including the mighty Euro. Half a year ago, one Euro is equal to about 64 Philippine Peso but now a Euro is just 59 something compared to Philippine Peso.

Of course, I am happy for our country because its economy seems to be finally taking off but are our families back home benefiting from this? They said prices of the goods in the Philippines continue to climb higher despite the stronger value of peso. Looking at it now, the benefits of this economic rise is not yet felt by the common citizens but I am sure that it is giving OFWs a hard time coming up with the extra dollars they have to add to their remittances to equal the Peso amount their families are expecting to receive.
